Empowered women building a brighter future for generations
The IP Salumay Group was founded on May 2, 2022. It comprises Matigsalug women from barangays Baganihan and Salumay in Davao City.
Its members share common ideas and passion for honing their handcrafting and weaving skills as means to improve their way of life and promote their Matigsalug products, which they take pride in.
The organization envisions a thriving tribe with women empowered to have their livelihood and help augment their families' income.
They have long been known for their innate creativity as they specialise in creating fashion accessories and baskets and sewing tribal wear clothes, and uniforms, among others, that showcase their rich culture and temperament.
They usually sell their products along the highway for local consumers and tourists but in the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their income.
The IP Salumay women were among the beneficiaries of the Uplifting the IP Women Project in Davao of the New Zealand Embassy to the Philippines as a funding agency with partners Go Negosyo, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao Region, Zeald, and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Davao Region.
They desire to be a sustainable and prosperous start-up group for the next generation, providing livelihood opportunities for the Matigsalug women and empowering them to become better and more skilled entrepreneurs. In this way, their rich culture will be preserved and continue for future generations.
